Adult ADHD Assessment in Melbourne

Comprehensive ADHD assessment for adults, conducted by experienced psychologists. A considered, therapeutic process designed to give you genuine clarity, not just a diagnostic label

Currently accepting new clients in July for in-person and telehealth appointments.

When ADHD Goes Unrecognised Until Adulthood

Many of the adults we assess have spent decades wondering why everyday tasks feel disproportionately hard. They've built careers, completed degrees, raised families, often by working twice as hard as those around them, and still wonder whether something is going on beneath the surface.

You might be considering an ADHD assessment if you recognise yourself in some of these:

  • You can hyperfocus on what interests you, but routine admin feels impossible

  • You're chronically late, despite your best efforts to be organisedYour emotional reactions feel bigger and faster than the situation calls for

  •  Anxiety or depression diagnoses haven't fully explained what's going on

  • You've recognised ADHD in a family member and started questioning your own experiences

  • You're exhausted from compensating, and you suspect burnout is part of a longer story

Late-recognised ADHD in adults often looks different to the classroom stereotype. It can be quiet, internalised, and easily mistaken for other conditions. A thorough assessment helps clarify what's actually going on.

A Considered, Therapeutic Assessment

We don't run ADHD assessments as a fast tick-box exercise. The process is structured, evidence-based, and clinically rigorous, and at the same time, designed to be useful and reflective in itself.

That means we:

  • Take time to understand your developmental, educational, and psychosocial history

  • Use standardised, validated measures alongside in-depth clinical interview

  • Consider co-occurring conditions and differential diagnoses, including anxiety, depression, trauma, autism, and sleep disorders

  • Pay close attention to masked or internalised presentations that are often missed

  • Discuss what your traits mean for your life, not just whether they meet diagnostic criteria

Our approach is neurodivergent-affirming. We treat ADHD as a different way of being wired, not a deficit to be corrected. The goal is clarity, not pathology.

How Assessment Works

The full process typically takes four to five sessions across several weeks.

Intake session

Your first session, in-person or via telehealth, focuses on understanding your goals, your current concerns, and what's brought you to consider assessment now. We discuss your background and explain the rest of the process. Afterwards, we send through tailored questionnaires for you to complete in your own time.

Diagnostic assessment sessions

Over a minimum of two sessions, your psychologist conducts an in-depth clinical interview using a therapeutic assessment approach. This includes developmental and educational history, exploration of executive functioning, attention, emotional regulation, and coping strategies, alongside structured and standardised measures. Where helpful, we may seek collateral information, for example from a partner or family member.

Clinical formulation and feedback

We integrate everything into a comprehensive formulation. In the feedback session, we discuss findings in accessible language, walk you through how ADHD traits (or other relevant patterns) show up in your life, and provide tailored, practical recommendations. You'll have time to ask questions and reflect on what the outcome means for you.

Who Conducts Your Assessment

All assessments at East Brunswick Psychology are conducted by registered psychologists. Psychologists complete a minimum of five years of university training, including postgraduate qualifications in psychological assessment, diagnosis, and evidence-based treatment of more complex presentations. We are registered with AHPRA and maintain ongoing professional development in neurodivergence.

Why this matters for ADHD

ADHD in adults rarely presents in isolation. It commonly co-occurs with anxiety, depression, trauma, and autism, and these can mask or mimic ADHD symptoms. Psychologists are specifically trained in differential diagnosis, which means we're equipped to untangle what's ADHD, what's something else, and what's both.

What You Walk Away With

At the end of the process, you receive:

  • A formal diagnostic outcome, including consideration of any co-occurring or differential conditions

  • A detailed written report explaining results in plain language

  • Personalised, evidence-based recommendations for executive functioning, work, study, relationships, and emotional regulation

  • Documentation suitable for your GP, a psychiatrist (for medication discussions), workplaces, educational institutions, and NDIS applications where relevant

A note on medication

Psychologists in Australia can formally diagnose ADHD, but only psychiatrists (or paediatricians for children) can prescribe ADHD medication. Our diagnostic report supports your next step if you choose to pursue medication, by providing the documentation a prescribing doctor needs to consider treatment.

Investment

ADHD-only assessment: $1,990

This fee covers your intake session, the diagnostic interview sessions, questionnaire setup and interpretation, report writing, and your feedback session.

If the process suggests autism may also be relevant, we can discuss expanding into a combined Autism and ADHD assessment ($3,100), so you receive a complete picture in one process.

Medicare and private health

A valid Mental Health Care Plan from your GP may entitle you to Medicare rebates for part of the assessment. Many private health funds also offer rebates for psychology under extras cover. We're happy to discuss what you can expect to claim.

Common Questions

Do I need a GP referral?

1

No referral is needed to book. However, a Mental Health Care Plan from your GP allows you to access Medicare rebates, so organise this beforehand if you'd like to use them.

5

Can I get medication after this assessment?

2

Not directly through us. Psychologists in Australia can diagnose ADHD but cannot prescribe medication. Our report provides the documentation a psychiatrist (or appropriately qualified GP) needs to consider treatment, and we can suggest next-step pathways.

How is this different from a psychiatrist's assessment?

3

Psychiatrists are medical doctors who can prescribe; their assessments are often shorter and focused on medication suitability. A psychology assessment is more comprehensive, with more time spent on history, differential diagnosis, and recommendations beyond medication. Many people see both, with the psychology assessment informing the psychiatry consultation.

How long does the full process take?

4

Most clients complete the process within four to six weeks, depending on scheduling and the time needed for questionnaires.

Will my GP and psychiatrist accept the report?

Yes. Reports from AHPRA-registered psychologists are widely accepted by GPs, psychiatrists, workplaces and educational institutions. However, requirements vary so please check with your provider to ensure they will accept your report.
